Trump-Xi Summit Puts AI Safety and Global Tech Rivalry in Focus
U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet in Washington this week, with artificial intelligence expected to feature prominently. Despite intensifying competition for AI leadership, Washington and Beijing are exploring limited cooperation on safety risks, including a proposed system for notifying each other about serious AI incidents.
The U.S. and China are the two major forces shaping advanced AI development. Their competition spans chips, models, critical minerals, cybersecurity and military applications, but risks including AI-enabled cyberattacks, biological misuse and loss of control are creating areas where cooperation could benefit both sides.
Xi will visit the United States from September 23–25, with the Trump-Xi meeting scheduled for September 24. AI safety, trade, rare earths, technology restrictions and broader geopolitical issues are expected to feature in discussions.
