Spain Housing Protesters Camp in Madrid as Rent Crisis Intensifies

Around 1,000 housing protesters have camped in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol following the eviction of 87-year-old María del Carmen Abascal from her home of seven decades. Demonstrators are demanding stronger tenant protections, limits on rent increases and safeguards against evictions as Spain struggles with soaring housing costs.
The protest has turned one eviction into a national debate over housing affordability. Spain’s government has proposed measures including protection for vulnerable tenants from eviction until 2030, but parliamentary approval is required.
Spain’s parliament is due to vote on the government’s housing measures. Abascal’s landlord has meanwhile agreed to let her return to her apartment at her previous rent, while activists say broader demonstrations will continue.

23 Sept: Abascal evicted

26–27 Sept: Mass protests and Puerta del Sol encampment begin

29 Sept: Government approves emergency housing measures

30 Sept–2 Oct: Protest continues

Next: Parliamentary vote and further demonstrations.
