Jaishankar Defends India–Russia Ties: “People Don’t Forget Good History or Bad History”

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar defended New Delhi’s longstanding relationship with Russia, saying Moscow stood by India when its security and territorial integrity faced threats while much of the world backed a neighbouring military regime. He said historical experience continues shaping India’s independent foreign policy and strategic choices today.
Jaishankar’s remarks explain why India continues maintaining substantial ties with Russia despite Western criticism over Moscow and the Ukraine war. He said the relationship now extends beyond history into trade, investment, defence, nuclear energy and space cooperation.
India says it wants the Russia–Ukraine conflict resolved through dialogue, diplomacy and negotiations. Jaishankar also said New Delhi has recently become more directly involved in discussions with both Moscow and Kyiv, including efforts concerning safe shipping in the Black Sea.
