
India Builds World’s Longest Road Using Recycled Steel Slag
India inaugurated a 1.85-kilometre steel-slag road in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, recognised as the world’s longest using processed steel-slag aggregates. Developed by CSIR-CRRI and Jindal Steel, the indigenous technology reportedly cuts construction costs by around 40 percent and delivers four times the strength of conventional roads while converting industrial waste into infrastructure.
The technology can conserve natural stone, reduce steel-industry waste and potentially produce stronger, less expensive roads, particularly for heavy-duty and challenging environments.
CSIR-CRRI has received an order for a 40-kilometre steel-slag road using material from Jindal Steel’s Angul plant in Odisha. Wider adoption will depend on technical suitability, standards and implementing agencies.
Initial demonstration completed at Hazira → technology deployed on NH-66 and in Arunachal Pradesh
September 12, 2026: 1.85-kilometre Raigarh road inaugurated and Guinness record conferred → Next: 40-kilometre Odisha project planned.
