AI Development Linked to Green Innovation Across Chinese Cities
A study of 180 Chinese cities from 2010–2022 found AI development was consistently associated with more renewable-energy patent approvals. The relationship was strongest among cities with medium innovation capacity, relatively stronger in large cities and western China, and more stable in cities less dependent on natural resources, supporting tailored policies.
The findings suggest AI could support China’s carbon-neutral transition by accelerating renewable-energy innovation. However, the benefits vary according to cities’ economic structure, location, size and existing innovation capacity.
Policymakers may develop city-specific strategies connecting AI investment with green research, renewable-energy industries and patent development. Further research is needed to establish causal mechanisms and evaluate whether the findings apply beyond China.
