भारत ने 1.05 अरब डॉलर के कंटेनर-निर्माण कार्यक्रम को मंज़ूरी दी है, जिसका लक्ष्य वार्षिक क्षमता को दस गुना बढ़ाना है, यानी लगभग 70,000 TEU से बढ़ाकर 750,000 TEU करना। वित्त वर्ष 2039–40 तक चलने वाले इस कार्यक्रम में प्रोत्साहन राशि से कारखानों, उत्पादन, परीक्षण और वैश्विक प्रमाणन को सहयोग मिलेगा। इससे चीन के दबदबे वाले शिपिंग-कंटेनर उद्योग में विविधता आ सकती है, साथ ही अंतरराष्ट्रीय व्यापार की मज़बूती और भारत की भविष्य की निर्यात क्षमताएँ भी सुदृढ़ होंगी।

China currently manufactures approximately 95% of the world’s shipping containers. Building another large, internationally certified production base could diversify this concentrated supply chain and improve container availability during disruptions to global shipping. India’s programme also creates potential international demand for specialised steel, coatings, castings, flooring and locking systems while supporting its emergence as a container exporter.

The programme will begin supporting eligible projects from FY2027–28. Manufacturers must establish new factories or expand existing plants, complete testing and secure certification under international shipping standards. Qualifying greenfield facilities must provide at least 100,000 TEUs of annual capacity. Domestic-content requirements will rise from 70% through FY2031–32 to 90% beginning in FY2032–33.
